How to make a solenoid coil winding?


If you lay a winding wire side by side, the wires will carry current who is in opposite direction, and it will cancel each other's magnetic field. What you have to do is to wind the windings on a hollow bobbin, so the current in the winding will travel in the same direction which will enforce each other's magnetic field.


The strength of the magnetic field depends on the winding wire diameter, and the number of winding turns. Bigger wire diameter and more winding turns will create stronger magnetic field. For the same numbers of turns, the longer the bobbin (solenoid) is, the weaker the magnetic field will be. Fewer turns can be compensated by greater current or reduced solenoid length.


The formula of a solenoid magnetic field strength: B=μI*n/l. The inductance of a solenoid is close to L=μr²n²π/l, but diverges increasingly from this estimation as the length becomes shorter relative to the radius.


If you are not familiar with this formula, here's a calculator you can use directly to estimate field strength and it uses a field value called permeability and this means you can check on various materials and choose one that gives the highest strength BUT for household coil making a piece of iron is fine.
